Maine’s bicentennial

Over the past year of Maine the Way, we’ve celebrated the ecosystems of Maine—from the rocky treeless summits to the rocking gray-blue ocean and the nearly endless northern forests to our numerous inland waterways spilling seaward. Yet, while undoubtedly our state’s natural beauty draws people here and offers an almost unparalleled vastness and ruggedness for the Northeastern United States, that is only a small part of the Maine equation. Rather, it is the people, both past and present, that have shaped this state into the place we love today, sculpting it bit by bit, decade by decade.

As Maine celebrates its bicentennial, it is our great honor at Maine the Way to announce a special Bicentennial Edition of Maine the Way, created in collaboration with the Maine Office of Tourism. This 200 page publication will both delve into our colorful and storied history, as well as take a good look at the amazing people shaping the present and future of our land, our cities, and our seas here in Maine. As in previous editions of Maine the Way, long and short form stories will be paired with dazzling photography and captivating illustrations, all wrapped up in a clean and crisp design.

Maine the Way is a new kind of Maine publication.

Bringing the concept of "slow-journalism" to Maine, we take the time to properly research, write, and photograph our stories, design a beautiful finished product, and give you, the reader, ample time to thoroughly enjoy each issue before the next one comes to your door. The 160 page magazine leaves plenty of room for each piece to unfold naturally, with full page photo spreads, ample negative space, and a beautifully designed reading experience. With a mix of in-depth articles, photo essays, poetry, and illustration, Maine the Way has something for everyone.

Putting content first, Maine the Way holds the test of time - whether you pick it up for the first time and enjoy the photos as you flip through or sit down with an issue a few weeks later and learn something new. From the beginning, it has been our priority to make the finest publication we feasibly can. The weight of each issue can be felt both in the high-quality, uncoated, fine art paper, as well as the human-interest stories that will carry relevance for generations to come. Printed here in Maine, with environmentally friendly vegetable-based inks in a 100% wind-powered facility, we hope you enjoy the love and craft that makes us Maine the Way.

“I am a native Mainiac from Fryeburg visiting family. I currently live in the Willamette, Valley, Oregon. I discovered your magazine in a bookstore in downtown Portland. Wow, I am blown away by your magazine! As I'm sure you know, it's incredibly gorgeous, with the voice, stories, and images that capture the essence of our great home state. Thank you for developing this beautiful publication.”
